The borough council of Tamaqua, in their great wisdom, has raised the price of parking in the 200 block of East Main from $200 a year to $1,000 a year.

The 200 block of East Broad is the most populated block in the entire borough. Most of the people living in the 200 block are on fixed income, retired, and disabled; also people who are on Section 8 housing.

With this in mind, why don't we put parking meters throughout the whole community, that way we can make lots of money in the borough.

I think we should start with Arlington Street as two of our councilmen live there and would have no trouble getting their neighbors to pay $1,000 a year to park in front of their house.

When we look at the 200 block of Main Street, we find that it is over 200 people living in that one block. We only have two businesses - a dentist and a hairdresser. The rest of the people live in the high-rise or the Majestic house.

As I see it, this is not way to treat our retired people by raising the price of parking 500 percent. All of you young people in the town might want to think what it will be like when you grown old.
