William Gothard featured at ArtSpace
The Pocono Arts Council has announced a special ArtSpace Gallery exhibit featuring a retrospective of the work of William Gothard during the month of April.
An opening reception will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday.
The show runs through April 30.
An oil painter, Gothard's art has focused on all aspects of the human condition through a series of self-portraits and individual and group portraits.
His work is remarkable in its ability to capture his subjects at a precise moment in time, honestly and unblinkingly. Gothard was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. in 1932.
He discovered art at a young age and evolved into a passionate realist-expressionist.
He is best known for his portraiture, however, his other varieties are equally remarkable. He has an extraordinary gift for capturing his subjects "in the moment" and powerfully relaying the feeling of that moment to his audience.
He puts his life into his work and brings his work to life.
Gothard won the Saint-Gaudens Medal for Fine Draftsmanship at Flushing High School and earned a New York City School Art League Scholarship to The School for Art Studies.
He worked for Oxford University Press and served four years in the Navy before attending New York's American Art School. He is a former director of MCS Gallery in Easton and currently resides in Sciota.
In addition to art, Gothard has a profound love and appreciation for jazz music and spent much of his younger years in New York jazz clubs.
He also enjoys learning about art and the biographies of the artists who created it.
