Achievement dinner

The 56th Annual Tamaqua Area High School Achievement Awards Ceremony will be held May 12 in the school district auditorium. Doors will open at 5 p.m. with the program slated to begin at 6 p.m.

Light refreshments will be available from 5 to 6 p.m. More than $150,000 in scholarship funding will be awarded to the student winners.

Sorority news

The annual Tamaqua Community Easter Egg Hunt, sponsored by the Preceptor Alpha Upsilon chapter of Beta Sigma Sorority, was declared a huge success at the chapter's most recent meeting. Winners of the guess the candy contest were Grace Semko, Sammy Darsh and Josie Schickram. Grand prize winners were Chase Roseland, Vincent Kunkel and Breanna Thorn.

Also in celebration of Easter, sorority members visited the Hometown Nursing Center, presenting residents with an Easter gift, played bingo and served refreshments.

Founder's Day was celebrated April 30 at the Oak Hill Inn in Orwigsburg. Joining the Tamaqua sorority sisters were members of the Pottsville chapter. Wanda Keefer was presented the "Girl of the Year Award," while Helen Walters was presented the "Program of the Year" Award for the personality quiz she offered.

Perfect attendance awards were also presented.

The next meeting will be 6:30 p.m. May 14, at Two Kings Restaurant.

Rotary news

Members of the Tamaqua Rotary Club will be at Boyer's Food Market on Center Street Saturday to collect nonperishable items for the upcoming "Hunger Weekend" event.

Rotarians will be at the food store from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Donated goods will be divided between two Tamaqua food pantries, the Salvation Army and Trinity United Church of Christ.

Anyone wishing to arrange for a donation pick up may call Mary at 570-668-5076.

Calvary Methodist

The Rev. Edward Bean will officiate at the 10:25 a.m. service this Mother's Day Sunday in Calvary Evangelical United Methodist Church in the Lewistown Valley. Sunday school for all ages will be held at 9:15 a.m.

An hour of praise and prayer will be held next Wednesday at 7 p.m.

The Lewistown Valley Bible Vacation School will be held from 6 to 8:15 p.m. from June 9 through June 13 at the Lewistown Valley Tabernacle. The Bible school will include classes for children, ages 2 through sixth grade, as well as a teen class and an adult class. St. John Lutheran

The Rev. Phyllis Wolford will officiate at the 9:15 a.m. worship service Sunday in St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church. Sunday school and Confirmation classes will meet at 10:30 a.m.

Next week's activities include: Monday, church council meets at 7 p.m., deadline for June Messenger; Wednesday, angel choir meets at 6 p.m., shepherd choir rehearsal at 6:30 p.m., chancel choir practice at 7:30 p.m.

Zion Lewistown

The Rev. Jim Williams will officiate at the 10:30 a.m. service this Sunday in Zion Church in the Lewistown Valley. Sunday school will meet at 9:15 a.m.

Activities for next week will include: Tuesday, fundraising committee meets at 6:30 p.m., preschool meeting is at 7:30 p.m.; Thursday, consistory meets at 6:30 p.m.
