Board of Health

The April meeting of the Tamaqua Board of Health took place at the Tamaqua Municipal Building with Randolph Gormley, Earl Boettger, James Gormley, Shirley Becker, health officer Judith Hadesty R.N and health enforcement officer Mitch Geist in attendance.

Geist reportedly received and adjusted 25 complaints in March: one leaking sewer; 17 buildings condemned as unfit for human habitation; two animal waste; and five for trash.

There were no cases of reportable diseases for the month.

The board meets the first Wednesday of each month, at 10 a.m., in the Tamaqua Municipal Building, 320 E. Broad St., Tamaqua.

Open mic

The Tamaqua Community Art Center hosts an "Open Mic Night" the fourth Thursday of every month, providing opportunities for local talent of all ages and genres. The events run from 6:30 to 9 p.m. at the center, located at 125 Pine St.

Healthy living

A "Living a Healthy Life" series will be held in Tamaqua from 12:30 to 3 p.m., Thursdays, beginning April 17. The six-week series, designed to help people with chronic illness, will be held at the Tamaqua Salvation Army, 105 W. Broad St.

The sessions are also open to caregivers, spouses, family members and the general public. Participants will learn ways to improve healthful behavior, health status and help reduce hospital stays.

The sessions are free, but registration is required through Diakon Community Services for Seniors. For more information, or to register, call 570-624-3017.

Bethany EC

The Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 8 a.m. traditional service Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church.

A contemporary service will be held at 10:30 a.m. at the Tamaqua YMCA, including nursery and primary church. Sunday school classes, for all ages, will meet at 9:15 a.m. at the church.

Also this Sunday, the monthly service at the Tamaqua ABC High Rise will be held at 6 p.m.

Activities for next week will include: Tuesday, prayer time at 8:30 a.m.; Wednesday, Tamaqua Youth Ministry meets at 6:30 p.m.; Thursday, Maundy Thursday service, with communion, 7 p.m. at the church; Friday, community Good Friday service, noon, at Trinity UCC, 7 p.m. Tenebrae service at Bethany; Saturday, musician rehearsal at 8:30 a.m., praise practice at 9 a.m.
