School board to meet
The Pleasant Valley School District Board of Education will meet at 8 p.m. Thursday, in the district's administrative building.
Library activities
This Saturday, Flag Day, the Western Pocono Community Library will offer Family Fun Day at 10:30 a.m. and at 1 p.m., the Saturday matinee, "12 Years a Slave," which is rated R. For more information call the library at 570-992-7934.
Virginia visitors
A choir of 60 to 80 youth from Richmond, Virginia will be bringing their Every Moment 2014 Tour to Effort United Methodist Church's weekend services.
The service on Saturday is at 6 p.m. and the Sunday services are at 8:30 and 11 a.m. on Father's Day. These youth provide music at a variety of venues, as well as working on various service projects along the way, says Effort UMC's pastor, the Rev. Robin G. Fisher.

Summer worship hours
Zion Lutheran, Brodheadsville, begins its summer worship time this weekend. Saturday worship will be at 5 p.m. and Sunday services at 8 and 9:30 a.m. Sunday School is in recess as of June 15.
Free Father's Day event
The West End Wings Model Airplane Club of Effort will be holding its 36th Annual Father's Day Air show from 1 to 4 p.m., Sunday (rain date is Sunday, June 22).
The event will feature a variety of remote control model aircraft including Piper Cubs, Extra 300, F-14 and other jets, military and sport planes and helicopters. Special attractions include flying race cars and a flying lawn mower.
The opening flight will include a flying flag and eagle, aerial aerobatics, formation flights as well as airplane races.
Other activities will include a children's glider-throw contest and a candy drop. Refreshments will be available for purchase.
Attendees are advised to bring a chair.

Directions are: Route 209 to Brodheadsville, to Route 715 North, approximately 2 miles. Turn left onto Effort-Neola Road. Continue to next left onto Mayfield Drive. Signs will be posted.
Effort shawls
Prayer Shawl Ministry at Effort UMC meets the first and third Tuesdays of the month. The next meeting is 10:30 a.m., June 17. Anyone wanting to see all the places around the globe those shawls have gone can check out the map in the Narthex with the red pins in it.

Officers installation
The West End Lions Club will hold its annual dinner meeting on Wednesday, June 18, at Kinsleys, with Lions District 14U new Gov. Sharon Kimmel, attending to install the club's new officers.
Little League meeting
West End Little League will have its monthly meeting at 8 p.m., Thursday, June 19, at the Chestnuthill Park Building. Managers and coaches are encourages to attend. Team parents and members of the league are welcome.
Free concert
The West End Park & Open Space Commission will host a free concert at 5 p.m. Sunday, June 22, featuring Christina Lenway (contemporary favorites) and the Lost Ramblers, an acoustic band specializing in old time music, at the Chestnuthill Park, 221 Route 715 in Brodheadsville.

Driver refresher
The new Smart Driver four and eight-hour classroom refresher/defensive driving course is designed for qualified drivers 50 and older. There are no tests and membership in AARP is not necessary.
The next such course offered in Chestnuthill Township will take place on July 19 and July 26, beginning at 1 p.m. each day. For more information contact the instructor at 570-619-4006.
Volunteers sought
The elementary and middle schools in the Pleasant Valley School District are asking families to help at the West End Fair's funnel cake stand during the week of Aug. 24 through Aug. 30.
The profits are distributed to each school based on volunteer hours for each school. For more information, call the respective school or check the school's web site under PV Elementary.
