Weatherly woman celebrating 91 years

Winifred Emma (Mulhern) Woods, whose nickname is "Winkie," is celebrating her 91st birthday.

Born in West Hazleton on April 12, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Winifred and Daniel Mulhern of West Hazleton.

She is currently a resident at Heritage Hill Senior Community

Winkie graduated from Weatherly Area High School in 1940. She then attended McCann's School of Business for stenography and later began working in the Hazleton National Bank building for A. Sterling Learn, CPA.

She and Sterling later married in 1945 and were married for 42 years until his death in 1987.

She then met and married Walter Woods on Nov. 12, 1994 and is still happily married, with both of them residing at Heritage Hill Senior Community.

Before moving to Heritage Hill the couple traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and abroad.

Winkie has three children: Thomas J. Learn of Palmyra, N.Y., William Learn of LeLand, N.C. and A. Sterling Learn, who is deceased.

She has seven grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was a member of the choir at Our Lady of Lourdes Church (formerly St. Nicholas Church) in Weatherly and she was a member of a bowling league in Hazleton.
