Master gardeners to share secrets for propagating pollinator plants
Penn State Master Gardeners in Carbon County will celebrate "National Pollinator Week" from 1-1:30 p.m. Saturday at the pollinator demonstration garden, located at 529 Lentz Trail in Jim Thorpe.
Master gardeners will give a free propagation presentation and teach the best methods for propagating pollinator friendly plants by seeds, by cuttings and by division.
There will be free information sheets on various methods of propagation, and a tour of the pollinator garden. Master gardeners will be on hand to answer questions.
If you want to try propagation by cuttings, you can register for a hands-on session that will follow the demonstration.
There will be a materials fee of $5 to cover the cost of rooting hormone, planting cups and rooting medium.
Two pollinator friendly plants were chosen for this workshop.
The leaf cutting will be a mint and the stem cutting a weigela, a woody ornamental beloved by hummingbirds for its red trumpet flowers in the spring.
Supplies are limited. Preregister by calling 570-325-2788 or email CarbonExt@psu.edu. Please provide name, address, phone number, email and the name of the program you are registering for.
