The Women's Club of Lehighton held its final dinner of the year on Wednesday, and used this meeting to show their support for organizations in the Lehighton area.

Representatives from the Lehighton Area Memorial Library, Blue Mountain Health System's Lehighton campus, Family Promise of Carbon County and the borough of Lehighton each received a donation that will be used to improve their facilities or outreach.

These four organizations were chosen based on need by the Women's Club Past Presidents' group.

"We have serviced the community for over 100 years," said past President Gloria DeSousa.

She noted that when the Women's Club of Lehighton was founded in 1913 as the Civic Club of Lehighton, its first project was to purchase trash cans for the borough.

The club has also historically supported the library, hospital, school district and fire companies.

Donations to the borough will be used to pay for a new "Welcome to Lehighton" mural at the D&L trailhead near the Route 209 bypass.

The mural features a panoramic painting of the mountains surrounding Lehighton and a portrayal of the area's railroad history.

The library plans to use its donation to reupholster its chairs, which are original to the building's opening in 1966.

The Women's Club also installed its officers for the upcoming year. Officers include Nancy R. Carlson, president; Lisa Everett, secretary; and Rena Exner, treasurer.
