Art and letters

Ruth Smith, president of the Western Pocono Lioness Club, reports that the Patriotic Coloring Contest the club held recently resulted in a lot of fun for the participating children and families as well as beautiful creations and moving letters to be sent to local Armed Forces personnel through Operation: Touch of Home.

The club's board will meet at noon, July 10, at Cherry's Sunset Diner in Kresgeville. Members are welcome to join the board gathering for the luncheon meeting at her own expense.

Park work

Chestnuthill Township Park Committee will be adding mulch to the playgrounds on Route 715, Brodheadsville beginning at 9 a.m. Thursday, July 11. Volunteers are needed and should bring a rake, shovel and wheelbarrow and help renovate the play areas. Boy/Girl Scout troops are welcome. Movie time

The Western Pocono Community Library has movie time on its calendar of special events for 1 p.m. on Fridays in July. Call the library for more information (570) 992-7934.

Adoption day

Pocono Greyhound Adoption will host a Meet & Greet event at Tractor Supply, Route 209, Brodheadsville, from noon to 3 p.m., Saturday, July 13.

Judging ahead

On Sunday, July 14, the judges will decide the winners of the annual Our Lady Queen of Peace Bake Off. The competition will take place at the church festival on that date. Celebrity judges will sample submitted desserts and judge them on taste, presentation and originality. To preregister and keep one's entry confidential, call Jane at (610) 381-6176.

National Jamboree

Steve Rhoads, Scoutmaster of Troop 98, and some members of the troop will be visiting the National Boy Scout Jamboree this month, but just for an afternoon. The group is planning several other activities along with the trip, such as historic hikes, rafting, etc.

They are also planning a high adventure trip to Maine for next summer. In April, Troop 98 had its 98th and 99th Eagle Scout approved by National BSA. Scoutmaster Rhoads is hopeful that in August the troop's 100th Eagle Scout will be approved.

One of the Troop 98's early Eagles will be serving as staff chaplain at the Jamboree for the entire event.
