Senior citizens
The Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met Aug. 1 at the Masonic Lodge in Hometown, with 78 members in attendance. President Jean Machamer conducted the business session.
Reports were presented by the vice president, treasurer and secretary. The meeting included a celebration of June and July birthdays.
Final preparations were made for the Aug. 15 picnic. Participants were reminded to bring a tray, a pen and a bingo dauber. Sept. 9 was selected as the date for a trip to Shady Maple.
The meeting concluded with cards and social games.
The seniors meet at 1 p.m. every Thursday, at the Masonic Lodge, located on SR54 (East) in Hometown. Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. The center is handicap accessible.
CYO volleyball
Registrations are now being accepted for the 2013-2014 St. Jerome's Regional School CYO volleyball team. The team is open to girls in grades 4-8 who attend St. Jerome's School or CCD classes.

Summer concerts
The Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce is celebrating the seventh year of its free Summer Concert Series. The concerts are held, from 6-8 p.m. on the platform at the Tamaqua Train Station throughout the summer season.
The next concert will be Aug. 2 and is a rescheduled event from June. The featured artist will be Lizard Creek. Upcoming events include: Aug. 15, Todd Wolfe Band; Aug. 30, Jay Smar; and Sept. 13, Large Flower Heads.

St. Peter's Union
Sunday worship services are held at 9 a.m. in St. Peter's Union Church, Mantzville. The service will include a Joyous Noise offering. Summer Sunday School will be held at 10:15 a.m.
Also on Sunday, the church board will meet at 10:45 a.m.
Activities for next week will include: Monday, food co-op at 9 a.m.; Wednesday, retirees meet at 10 a.m.; Thursday, prayer group will meet at 4:45 p.m.
Calvary Evangelical
All services connected with Calvary Evangelical United Methodist Church will be held at the Lewistown Valley Tabernacle, 614 Valley Road, through Labor Day.
Sunday services are held at 10:25 a.m., Sunday school classes for all ages begin at 9:15 a.m.
This Sunday, the service will be under the direction of Lay Leader Terry Gerber. A special message will be provided by Dr. Streeter Stuart of Millersville. Bible study will be held at 6:30 p.m.
An hour of prayer and praise will be held Wednesday at 7 p.m.
The annual Tabernacle services will begin Aug. 23 and continue through Labor Day evening. Evening services will be held daily at 7 p.m. Special guests will be evangelists and song leaders, the Rev. Jeff and Jeanie Shelburne (daily); Austin Sullivan, missionary on Aug. 23; the Rev. George Holley, Aug. 26 through Aug. 30.
Special music will be presented by the Wehry Family on Sept. 1 and 2.
SS. Peter and Paul
The Holy Name Society of SS. Peter and Paul's Catholic Church will meet at 8 p.m. next Thursday. Topics for discussion will be the annual picnic, to be held Aug. 11 at the Mahoning Township Grove, and the 99th Annual Lithuanian Days celebration, Aug. 10-11 at the Schuylkill Mall in Frackville.
