Help needed

The West End Fair 250th Anniversary Celebration Committee is seeking volunteer help for its table inside the West End Fair Committee Museum.

Shuffleboard League

The fall shuffleboard league session at the American Legion in Gilbert was to start on Aug. 12 with sign-ups at the post. The play will be every Thursday, beginning at 6:30 p.m.

Zion's Seniors

The August meeting of Zion's Senior Citizens will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 15, in the parish hall in Brodheadsville.

Chestnuthill anniversary

The 250th Anniversary Committee for Chestnuthill will meet at 7 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 15, at the Chestnuthill Township Municipal Building on Route 715 in Brodheadsville.

Classes to begin

Monroe County's Jim Ecker, BCM International Missionary in eastern Pennsylvania, will be back at the West End Fair with the BCM display tent and puppet shows. Nine puppeteers are being trained weekly.

BCM classes will begin again in the West End come October, just as they were held last year with classes ending in May with students from Pleasant Valley Elementary combined with Polk (Kresgeville) for one class and the PV Intermediate in another class. Both were held in two hours on Fridays at the nearby Cornerstone Community Church, near the PVE and PVI schools.

Ecker plans to do the same with them starting the first Friday in October.

Meet and Greet

Camp Papillon will hold a Meet and Greet/Adoption Day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 17, at Tractor Supply, Route 209, Brodheadsville. People can come and meet the dogs, cats and critters that Camp Papillon has for adoption. They can also fill out an online application and get pre-approved in advance.

To adopt a pet, email adopt@camppapillon.org or, if you are not ready to adopt, think about fostering an animal. The group provides vet care, food, crates and whatever is needed.

Friday feature

The movie at the Western Pocono Library for Friday, Aug. 16, will be "National Treasure: Book of Secrets." It begins at 1 p.m.

Contemporary service

Effort UMC's Praise Band will lead the Contemporary Worship service at 9:45 a.m., Sunday, Aug. 18.

Free concert

The West End Park and Open Space Commission and Chestnuthill Township will host "sage" at the Chestnuthill Park, Rt. 715, Brodheadsville, as part of the free summer concert series at 6 p.m., Sunday, Aug. 18.

"Sage" performs an eclectic mix of contemporary, rock, pop and blues, featuring Maria Pennello and Phil Carollo.

Adoption Day

Safe Haven Pet Rescue will hold an adoption day from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 18, at Tractor Supply, Route 209, Brodheadsville. The organization requires a pre-adoption application with references and a home visit before adoption.

Safe Haven Rescue needs volunteers to help with adoption days, fundraising, transporting dogs to vets and groomers and fostering homeless dogs until they find their forever homes.

Lions meet

Western Pocono Lions Club will hold its monthly meeting Wednesday, Aug. 21, at The Old Mill Pizza on Route 209 in Sciota. The club and guests will gather at 6:30 p.m.; the meeting will begin at 7 p.m. The guest speaker for the evening will be Lions District 14U Governor Lizanne McElwee.

If the parking lot is full, Lions and guests can park on the grass next to the building.
