Crime prevention

A Crime Prevention Seminar will be held at 6 p.m., Feb. 18, at the Tamaqua Arts Center, 125 Pine St. This free seminar is being presented through the efforts of the Tamaqua Police Department, the Tamaqua Area Chamber of Commerce and the Tamaqua Safety Initiative.

Tips on ways to avoid becoming a victim and ways to prevent crimes will be offered.

Senior citizens

The Tamaqua Senior Citizens met Feb. 7 at the Masonic Lodge in Hometown with 72 members in attendance.

Vice President Nancy Gerber conducted the business session and provided her report. Jacquie Patrick provided the invocation, titled "We Want It Now."

Marie Williams is recuperating at home and Jane Tartar was added to the sick list.

Secretary Joan Anne Garber provided her report. Members were reminded to bring brown bag lunches for the February meetings.

The meeting concluded with cards and social games.

The seniors meet at 1 p.m. every Thursday, at the Masonic Lodge, located on SR54 (East) in Hometown.

Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. The center is handicap accessible.

West Penn softball

Due to last weekend's snow storm, the West Penn Softball League has added additional dates for accepting registrations for the 2013 season. The new dates will be Feb. 13, Feb. 18 and Feb. 20, from 6 to 8 p.m., at the West Penn Elementary School.

The league is open to players between the ages of 5-16.

Bethany EC

The Rev. Kevin Roberts will officiate at the 8 a.m. traditional and 10:30 a.m. contemporary worship services Sunday in Bethany Evangelical Congregational Church. Nursery and primary church are offered during the later service. Sunday school classes will meet at 9:30 a.m.

Also on Sunday, the TYM staff will met at 11:45 a.m.; monthly service at 2:30 p.m. at the Hometown Nursing Center; To Save A Life growth group will meet at 6:30 p.m. at the Tamaqua Arts Center; and the Couples Sacred Marriage growth group will meet at 7 p.m. at the church.

Activities for next week will include: Monday, drama growth group meets at 7 p.m.; Tuesday, Homes of Honor parents growth group meets at 7 p.m.; Wednesday, community Lenten service at noon, at Bethany, Tamaqua Youth Ministry will meet at 6:30 p.m., GriefShare meets at 7 p.m.; Thursday, coffee shop theology growth group meets at 7 a.m., encountering Jesus growth group meets at 1 p.m., men's fraternity meets at 6:30 p.m.; Saturday, musician practice at 8:30 a.m., followed by praise practice at 9:30 a.m.

St. Peter's Union

The Rev. Cheryl Moore will officiate at the 9 a.m. worship service this Sunday in St. Peter's Union Church, Mantzville. Sunday school classes meet at 10:15 a.m.

Also on Sunday, the board will meet at 10:45 a.m., Confirmation class will meet at 1 p.m., Scout pack meeting at 5 p.m., Daisies and Brownies will meet at 6 p.m.

Activities for next week include: Tuesday, Women's Association of St. Peter's meets at 7:30 p.m.; Thursday, prayer group meets at 4:45 p.m.

The choirs rehearse on Thursdays. Next week's schedule will include: cherubs at 6:30 p.m., junior choir at 7 p.m.; senior choir at 7:30 p.m.
