Nesquehoning

Free lunch for kids

During the school year a number of children receive free or reduced price school lunches. Research has shown that only one out of seven of these children gets the food needed in summer.

In 2012, the children's summer lunch program held at Meed's United Methodist Church in Nesquehoning served 1,600 meals to help these children. This summer the church hopes to continue that volunteer effort and is looking for help from the community.

Depending on attendance numbers and food costs, the church will need at least $40 each day. Lunches will be served four days each week: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., beginning Monday, June 17 and continuing through Friday, Aug. 16.

Community support would be greatly appreciated in the form of money (to cover the cost of food, kitchen and bathroom paper and cleanup products); or time donated to help prepare, serve and cleanup, which is an essential part of this endeavor.

For more information or to volunteer, call (570) 669-9212.
