Double winner
For the second consecutive year, Steve Sagala of Effort won the countywide Annual Senior Spelling Bee. Connie Pentz of East Stroudsburg won second place; and Linnae Cintron from Effort, Honorable Mention.
Rotary speaker
The West End Rotary Club will welcome Boy Scouts' Ken Ryno at its 7:30 a.m. breakfast meeting, Thursday, June 6. He will speak about the Eagle's Nest Fund.
PVEN Board
The Pleasant Valley Ecumenical Network's board of directors will meet at 9 a.m., Thursday, June 6, at Zion Lutheran Church in Brodheadsville.
PV Band Parents
The Pleasant Valley Band Parents will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at the high school.
Fun Bunch
Within the Western Pocono Lioness Club there is a social entity called the Fun Bunch, which tries to have one fun activity a month. Upcoming is the group's Picnic in the Park at 11:30 a.m. Friday at the Chestnuthill Park. Attendees will bring their own lunch, drink and a game to share.
In case of rain they will meet at Hilltop on Route 209, across from Kenro, and order off the menu.
PVP adult classes
Pleasant Valley Presbyterian Church, Brodheadsville, has Sunday worship services at 10:15 a.m. Adult Sunday school classes are at 9:15 a.m. and continue through the summer. Children's classes will begin again in the fall. The Pastor is the Rev. Bob Mitchell.

Greyhound adoption

Blood drive
Kinsley's ShopRite in Brodheadsville will host an American Red Cross blood drive Saturday, June 8, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. To schedule an appointment call 800-RED-CROSS.
Gardeners for Glory
This group of gardeners and future gardeners has been begun anew at Effort UMC, led by Julie Foley, master gardener. In May they planted bushes by the church food pantry entrance. In June the group will meet at 7 p.m., Thursday, June 13. Work will include weeding and deadheading plants.

Driver refreshers
Formerly 55-Alive, a four-hour AARP Driver Safety Program classroom refresher/defensive driving course for qualified drivers 50 and older is being offered at the Chestnuthill Park building Saturday, June 15, beginning at 1 p.m.

One must have evidence of taking the eight-hour course within the last 36 months.
Free fishing
Residents of Chestnuthill and Jackson townships can apply for half-day fishing permits on McMichaels Creek (Pohoqualine Fish Association Private Access) for Mondays and Tuesdays.
