Senior citizens
The Tamaqua Senior Citizens group met May 23 at the Masonic Lodge in Hometown, with 76 members in attendance. President Jean Machamer conducted the business session. A picnic lunch was held before the business meeting.
Jacquie Patrick provided the invocation, which was a tribute to military veterans in honor of Memorial Day. A memorial service was held for deceased members of the Tamaqua Senior Citizens, with a candle lit for each of the departed members.
Reports were offered by Vice President Nancy Gerber and secretary Carol Yanalavage. Eleanor Roberts was added to the sick list.
A trip to the Reading area, including Vanity Fair and Olive Garden, will be held on June 3. April and May birthdays will be celebrated at the May 30 meeting.
The meeting concluded with cards and social games.
The seniors meet at 1 p.m. every Thursday, at the Masonic Lodge, located on SR54 (East) in Hometown.
Anyone 55 or older is welcome to join. The center is handicap accessible.
Veterans help
A representative from the Disabled American Veterans will be available once a month at Tamaqua Borough Hall to offer free veterans' claim service for veterans as well as widows and dependent children of veterans. Information and assistance will be provided for service-connected disability claims, low income pension, health care claims for service-connected disabilities and low income veterans and other questions concerning veterans' benefits.
The representative will be at Tamaqua Borough Hall, 320 E. Broad St., on May 13, June 10 and July 8.
The DAV is committed to better lives for all veterans and their families.
SS. Peter and Paul
A Baccalaureate Mass will be celebrated at 8 a.m. June 2 in SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Graduates are asked to bring their caps and gowns and meet in the social hall before Mass. Coffee and doughnuts will be served following the service.
June 1 will be a Fatima Saturday. Confessions will be heard at 7:30 a.m., followed by a Recitation of the Rosary and Devotions before the 8 a.m. Mass.
Members of the parish Holy Rosary Society will attend the 8 a.m. Mass on June 2 and receive Holy Communion as a group. A rosary will be said before the Mass.
