Northern Carbon County ballot races

Published November 01. 2017 01:37PM

There are only four contested races on the municipal ballots in Northern Carbon County for the General Election to be held on Tuesday, Nov. 7. They include the Weatherly Borough Council, two races for the Weatherly Area School District Board of Education, and a matchup for seats on the Hazleton Board of Education.

Meanwhile, in six municipalities — Banks, Lausanne, Lehigh and Packer townships and Beaver Meadows and East Side boroughs — there are no contested races.

Here is what voters in northern Carbon County can expect to see on their ballots:

Weatherly Borough

Four four-year terms on the Weatherly Borough Council are up for grabs. There are five candidates, including Theresa D’Andrea, Harold Farrow and Jeffrey Miller, who appear on both the Democratic and Republican ballots, Democrat Leslie Moyer and Republican Norman Richie.

Republican Deborah Kohler is the only other person on the ballot. She is running unopposed for a four-year term as tax collector.

Weatherly School Board

In the school district balloting, the situation for four four-year terms is similar to that of the borough council. Five candidates are aspiring to the positions, and three of them are cross-filed on both tickets. They are Shay A. Wagner, Brian J. O’Donnell and Chad M. Obert. The other candidates are Democrat Melissa C. McGee and Republican Girard A. Fewins Sr.

The other WASD race has Wagner and O’Donnell running against each other for a two-year term on the board. Wagner is the Democratic candidate and O’Donnell is on the GOP side.

The district includes Lausanne, Lehigh and Packer townships and East Side and Weatherly boroughs.

Hazleton School Board

Voters in Banks Township and Beaver Meadows boroughs will participate in the Hazleton school board balloting, where five candidates are running for four four-year terms.

They include Linda DeCosmo, Ed Shemansky and Bob Mehalick, who are cross-filed on both the Democratic and Republican ballots, Democrat Robert W. Childs and Republican Alexander C. Van Hoekelen.

Banks Township

There are no contests in Banks Township this time around as three candidates, all Democrats, are unopposed. They include Charles J. Schalles, who is seeking re-election to a six-year term on the board of supervisors, Marian C. Lockwood, who will succeed longtime tax collector Irene Makowiec, who is retiring, for a four-year term, and Joseph R. Bodnar Jr., who is seeking the six-year term on the township’s board of auditors.

Beaver Meadows

Beaver Meadows Mayor Jeffrey S. Bobish, a Democrat, is seeking re-election to another four four-year term in that office and is without opposition.

In the borough council race, where three four-year terms are available, there are only two candidates. They are Democrat Robert J. Cryder III and Republican James G. Leonard.

Mary Ellen Hines, a Republican, is running unopposed for a four-term as the town’s tax collector.

Lausanne Township

There is a shortage of candidates in Lausanne Township. Two seats on the township’s board of supervisors — one for six years and the other for a four-year term — are up for grabs. Democrat Agnes K. Klynowsky is running unopposed for the six-year term. There are no candidates for the two-year term.

Tax collector Carol Tulay, a Democrat, is running for another four-year term in that office and is without opposition.

The township voters are supposed to elect two auditors, for six-year and two-year terms, however, there are no candidates for posts.

Lehigh Township

There are only two candidates on the Lehigh Township ballot, and both are Republicans. They are Lenny Weston Jr., who is running for the six-year term on the township’s board of supervisors, and longtime tax collector Teresa Barna, who is seeking another four-year term in that office.

There are no candidates for the six-year term on the board of auditors, nor the four-year term on the same board.

Packer Township

Like Lehigh Township, Packer Township also has only two candidates on the ballot.

Both Republicans, they are Adam Nyer, who is running for the six-year term on the township’s board of supervisors, and Valerie Kane, who is seeking the four-year term as tax collector.

No one is running for the six-year term on the township’s board of auditors.

East Side

Four Republicans who appear on the East Side Borough ballot are all unchallenged.

They include Colleen Donlin, who is running for a four-year term as mayor; Helen Jones and Elizabeth Berger, who are seeking four-year terms on the borough council, where three seats are up for grabs, and Lisa Jones, who is seeking the four-year term as tax collector.
