Northwestern defeated Northern Lehigh in wrestling to highlight Thursday scholastic sports action.

WRESTLING

Northwestern capitalized on five forfeits to hand Northern Lehigh a 44-24 Colonial League setback.

The Bulldogs held a 4-3 edge on the night in contested bouts, but couldn’t overcome the forfeits.

The Bulldogs’ duo of Dominic Bandle (220) and Preston Bauer (120) both recorded falls.

Harrison Bernhard (152) earned the Tigers’ lone pin.

Lehighton-North Schuylkill

Lehighton’s late comeback fell short as North Schuylkill came out on top with a 39-35 Schuylkill League victory.

Trailing 36-12 after nine matches, the Indians’ Lucas Sanguiliano (138), Chris Whiteman (145) and Richard Fronheiser (170) all picked up pins down the stretch and Logan Pagotto (152) received a forfeit victory. But a victory by North Schuylkill’s Dillon Edwards in the next-to-last bout prevented Lehighton from completing the comeback.

Tamaqua used a huge fourth quarter to rally for a 51-36 Schuylkill League victory over Pottsville.

Trailing by a point entering the final period, the Raiders outscored Pottsville 20-4 to remain unbeaten on the season.

Emma Kuczynski and Emily Titus scored 18 and 16 points, respectively, for Tamaqua (6-0, 2-0). Kuczynski also had 10 rebounds and five steals.

Tamaqua won the JV game, 32-14, behind 12 points from Serena Jones.

Mya Wetzel’s 20-point performance sparked North Schuylkill to a 44-38 Schuylkill League victory over Lehighton.

Sarah Wagner added 12 points for the Spartans.

Hailey Miller was the lone Indian to hit double figures with 10 points.

Tamaqua and Pottsville split in a Schuylkill League meet.

The Blue Raiders scored an 89-81 win on the girls’ side, while the Tide cruised to a 116-55 victory on the boys’ side.

Brianna Dumond was the lone Blue Raider to score multiple wins (100 Fly, 500 Free). Madelyn Jones (200 Free) and Ashley Jones (Diving) added first-place finishes.

The Blue Raiders’ Billy Shilko won first place in diving.
