Offices filled with write-in candidates
Voters elected 23 people in Carbon County municipalities by write-in votes in the general election held on Nov. 7.
Of that total, one mayor was elected, 11 people were elected to borough council positions, one supervisor post was won, two tax collectors were determined, and eight auditor positions were filled.
Generally, voters write-in the names of people they want to vote for positions in which there are no candidates on the ballot.
To win a position, a person needs to simply get one write-in vote, or more than another person who received vote(s) for the same office.
The winners were declared after the county’s elections bureau employees, Lisa Dart, director, and Jane Krebs, conducted a canvass of the balloting.
That process showed Paulette L. Watson was elected to a four-year term as mayor of Weissport. She collected 40 write-in votes. The two tax collectors’ positions won via write-in votes, both for four-year terms, were by Gayle Schafer in Parryville and Lynnette L. Moyer in Weissport, who received 48 and four votes, respectively. Ryan Hoffman was elected Lausanne Township supervisor for a six-year term with two write-in votes.
The 11 council positions were won as follows:
Beaver Meadows: Gloria Palma, four-year term, 12 votes; East Side: Sharon Mrozinski, four-year term, nine, and John Ceipiel, two-year term, nine; Nesquehoning: Mary A. Fox, four-year term, 34, and Michael Radocha, two-year term, 25; Palmerton: William Gallagher, two-year term, 23; Parryville: Cathy Hawk, 46, Patricia Wentz, 29; and Penni Szoke, 40, four-year terms; and Weissport: Gregory May, 21, and Thomas Ketchledge, 30, four-year terms.
There were also eight township auditor positions filled by the electorate using write-in votes, including: East Penn: Susan Rhoads-Procina, four-year term, nine votes; Kidder: Roy Lamberson, six-year term, two; Lausanne: Shaman Klynowsky, six-year term, three, and Debbie Tulay, two-year term, two votes; Lehigh: Cynthia Baade, both a six-year term and a four-year term with six votes for each; Packer: Lorayne Reshetar, six-year term, six votes; and James Walck, six-year term, 12.
