Official concerned with student safety in school zone

Published February 15. 2020 06:52AM

A Lehighton official said she’s concerned with student safety in a school zone based upon traffic flow.

Councilwoman Autumn Abelovsky told borough council on Monday the issue is getting worse.

“My goal is more education to the community where school zones are,” Abelovsky said. “Numerous children have almost been hit last month.”

Abelovsky said she witnessed numerous accidents at 11th and Mahoning street intersection, where drivers have disregarded the crossing guard and almost hit the children.

“I think it’s more to get the information out to the public,” she said. “When the police car is visible, then everybody slows down.”

Abelovsky then requested to meet with Mayor Clark Ritter and police Chief Brian Biechy to discuss solutions and a clear designation of the school zone in that area.

Protect the students and save the community. Sounds like a nice plan. Bravo.

Anyone, literally anyone, can make a difference and everyone should try.

This Autumn person apparently saw something and is saying something, bravo. Crossing guards need all the community support possible.

Sincerely,

Citizen David F. Bradley, Sr.
