Open enrollment for individual health insurance is now open
ETA Insurance Group, formerly ETA Benefits Group, an independent, full-service employee benefits firm and insurance agency in Nesquehoning, reminds those with health insurance coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace that the annual open enrollment period is going on now and runs until Dec. 15 for coverage to begin on Jan. 1.
During this time, anyone looking for individual health insurance coverage can enroll, switch plans, or get subsidies on health plans. Those who choose not to shop during this period are limited to signing up during special enrollment periods throughout the year, Medicaid/CHIP and paying the fee each year.
If you have employer-based coverage, there is no need to take action. The open enrollment period for the Health Insurance Marketplace only affects people without employer-based coverage and purchase their own insurance.
Insurance companies change plans every year, including adjusting the premium, deductibles, and co-payments. Even if an insured is enrolled in a program they are happy with, there could be another insurance plan that fits their needs even better.
Once the annual open enrollment period ends on Dec. 15, individuals who do not enroll or make changes to their plan will not be able to do so unless they experience a life change that qualifies them for a Special Enrollment period. Otherwise, they must wait until the 2019 open enrollment period.
