Palmerton’s famed gazebo located in the heart of its downtown park has been damaged following several acts of vandalism.

Contacted this morning, borough police Chief Randy Smith said the gazebo was damaged on two separate occasions.

“Somebody kicked out a couple of the spindles,” Smith said. “Kids with nothing better to do.”

Smith said the incidents occurred on Oct. 19 and Oct. 24.

He said on Oct. 19, kids believed to be between the ages of 13 and 16 were spotted in the gazebo burning holes in it with cigarette butts, leaving garbage all over and screaming vulgarities, including kicking out spindles.

Smith said that on Oct. 24, four more spindles were kicked out from the gazebo.

Borough Manager Rodger Danielson said the situation isn’t unique to the gazebo.

“It’s unfortunate; it’s a constant repair item,” Danielson said. “Kids hanging out there, can’t leave well enough alone out there.”

Danielson added, “It’s a regular thing that we have to replace the spindles.”

Smith said police are monitoring that particular area.

“We’re stepping up patrols in that area,” he said.

Smith said anyone with information can contact the police department at 610-826-4055. All information will be confidential.

If these punk kids get caught, have their parents foot the bill. Simple solution.
If this has been a "regular thing" maybe it's about time to put up a security camera and get the lowlife punks hauled in with their mommies and daddies who apparently don't follow a very good discipline routine at home!
