Palmerton area election races

Published November 01. 2017 01:37PM

Two municipalities in lower Carbon County will have general election contests when the polling takes place from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday.

Voters in Towamensing Township will have choices to make for two positions — supervisor and tax collector — while in Palmerton, six people are vying for four four-year terms on the council.

Meanwhile, there are no contests in balloting for positions on the Palmerton Area School District Board of Education, nor for the Magisterial District 56-3-03 minor judiciary position to be filled by the electorate, as well as positions in Bowmanstown and Lower Towamensing Township.

Here’s what voters in this part of Carbon can expect:

Towamensing Twp.

Voters will decide on who will fill the six-year term on the Towamensing Township board of supervisors that is up for grabs. The candidates are Democrat Scott Mosier and Republican Guy Seifert.

A race exists for the four-year term of tax collector. Running for it are Democrat Brenda L. Drew and Republican Joyce Borger.

Township voters are also slated to elect two auditors, one for a six-year term and another for a two-year term, but there are no candidates for either position.

Palmerton Borough

In Palmerton, six of the seven borough council seats are expiring, including four four-year terms and two two-year terms.

In the balloting for the four-year terms, there are six candidates, including Democrats Kris W. Hoffner, Jeremy Barbosa and Randy Gursky and Republicans Richard L. Nothstein, William Gallagher and Michael J. Ballard.

There are no candidates for the two two-year terms to be filled.

Mayor Christopher D. Olivia, a Democrat, is running for re-election to another four-year term of office and is unopposed. That is also the case of tax collector Lisa M. Nemeth, a Republican running for another four-year term.

Magisterial judge

Voters in Bowmanstown and Palmerton boroughs and Towamensing and Lower Towamensing townships will participate in the balloting for the six-year term as magisterial district judge in District 56-3-02. Bill Kissner, who is completing his first six-year term of office, is seeking re-election to another term and is virtually assured victory since his name appears on both the Democratic and Republican ballots.

In addition to the four municipalities in lower Carbon County, the district also includes Parryville Borough and Franklin Township.

Bowmanstown

There are no contested races in Bowmanstown Borough this year, where voters are scheduled to elect a mayor, four council members and a tax collector.

Mayor William Ravert, a Republican, is seeking another four-year term and is unopposed.

In the council race, four people are running for the four four-year terms, including Democrats Barbara B. Eastland, Robert Moyer and Burdell C. Steigerwalt and Republican Darren R. Thomas.

Longtime tax collector Maria E. Smith, a Democrat, is running for re-election to another four-year term of office and is unchallenged.

Lower Towamensing

Two candidates on the ballot in Lower Towamensing Township are both unopposed.

They are Supervisor Brent M. Green, a Democrat running for another six-year term on the board, and Nicole J. Jahelka, who is the Democratic and Republican nominations in the May primary election and is virtually assured to win the four-year seat.

No one is running for the six-year term on the board of auditors that township voters are scheduled to fill.

Palmerton school board

There are four four-year terms on the Palmerton Area School District Board of Education that will be filled this year, for which there are no contests.

Four candidates who won both Democratic and Republican nominations in May are the only ones on the ballot. They are Kathy Lendvay Fallow, Katherine J. Baumgardt, Earl Paules and Barry W. Scherer.

The district included Bowmanstown and Palmerton boroughs and Towamensing and Lower Towamensing townships.
