A large group of Palmerton residents began their Independence Day recognizing the town’s latest piece of American history.

A dedication ceremony was held at the site of the “Sons of Liberty – 1775” sculpture Thursday morning.

The sculpture, created by James Muir of Arizona, represents the 12 Palmerton men who left the comfort of their hometown to fight war in the Continental Army.

Carbon County Veterans Affairs Director Henry Desrosiers spoke on the importance minute men held to ensure independence and stability for the future America.

“As we gaze at this beautiful monument, our country began 243 years ago because of this type of men. In the event of conflict, these men were ready to fight in a moment’s notice,” Desrosiers said.

“This monument is the symbol of America’s willingness.”

Martha Moyer sang the national anthem and “God Bless America” and had some help from the crowd who joyfully sang along.

The sculpture was donated by Richard Nothstein and his family. Nothstein spoke during the ceremony, full of emotions and pride for the local hometown heroes.

“Thank you for coming to honor those early veterans from Palmerton. The 12 men who went to war with great risk because of their courage and dream of independence that motivated them,” Nothstein said.

The monument was beautifully decorated with several Betsy Ross flags and red and white flowers. Two bronze plaques will be added at a future date.

The Palmerton United Veterans Organization honor guard conducted the presentation of the colors.

The monument is located on the corner of Fourth Street and Delaware Avenue near the Palmerton Police Department.
