A Palmerton man is behind bars as the result of several drug-related charges.

Jeffrey Smith, 33, faces charges on one count each of possession with intent to manufacture or deliver; unlawful possession of a controlled substance; possession or delivery of a small amount of marijuana; possession of drug paraphernalia; and tampering with fabricating physical evidence.

According to the affidavit of probable cause filed by office Dane O’Brian of the Palmerton Borough Police Department:

At 12:40 p.m. Oct. 5, O’Brien made contact with a person who was identified to be Smith from past contacts at his residence in reference to an unrelated incident.

While speaking with Smith, consent to search his residence was obtained.

Upon entering the living room portion of the residence, various suspected drugs and related paraphernalia were observed on a living room end table.

At that time, Smith abruptly approached the table in question and began concealing various items inside his pockets.

O’Brien attempted to detain Smith, but he pulled away. As a result, substantial force was utilized to overcome his resistance, at which time one plastic bag containing green vegetable matter; one yellow capsule containing one glassine bag with two crystal-type rocks; one cigarette case containing $285 in various denominations; and various drug-related paraphernalia.

In addition, one digital scale and 1.2 grams of a white crystal-type substance were located on the end table that Smith removed various items from.

Smith is currently incarcerated in the Carbon County Correctional Facility in lieu of $10,000 straight bail.

Smith is scheduled to have a preliminary hearing at 9:15 a.m. Oct. 17 before District Judge William Kissner of Palmerton.
