Palmerton, NW split track meet
Palmerton and Northwestern split a Colonial League dual meet on a cloudy and chilly Tuesday afternoon.
The Blue Bombers prevailed on the boys side, 100-50, while the Tiger girls dominated their events for a 119-31 triumph.
Senior Jake Martinez played a pivotal role for Palmerton, coming away with wins in the 800, 1600 and 3200-meter events that accounted for some of the points for the Bombers.
Jordan Nelson was also key in the meet, taking the 110 hurdles, along with the long and triple jump.
“Jake is in tremendous shape,” Palmerton head coach Mike Gombert said, “Much like Jordan, we count on Jake for a lot of points, and he comes through for us, is extremely reliable and does a lot for us.
“Jordan’s a terrific athlete. We really rely on him for a lot of points in every meet hurdling, jumping. He’s in our relays, and usually steps up and performs quite well. We kind of count on that from Jordan for every meet.”
The Martinez-Nelson duo proved to be vital in the meet, as well as Aaron Stasko’s performance in the 100 and 200. Stasko ran an 11.0 in the 100 and backed that up with a 23.6 mark in the 200.
“Aaron’s certainly an accomplished sprinter for us for sure,” Gombert said. “He turned in a really good 100-meter time today. We were really, really pleased by that.”
Gombert also mentioned another strength his team used to help record Tuesday’s victory.
“We feel we have a lot of flexibility, particularly with our relays,” Gombert added. “I think it was kind of evident again today. We were pleased by a couple of our performances in the 400 by some kids that can provide us with depth and flexibility in the 4x400 (relay), which at the end of the meet can determine the outcome.”
Although Northwestern has a young team, head coach Chuck Groller was still pleased with the hard work they’ve put in.
“It’s a work in progress,” Groller said. “We have a very young boys team. We’re getting there in some events, but we’re weak on a lot of other events. A lot of hard work is coming about.
“We hope to see some improvement, maybe with the weather getting a little bit better, we’ll see what we can do. They work hard, but we just don’t have all the pieces yet.”
The Northwestern girls, meanwhile, dominated a young Palmerton team.
Sydney Derr broke a Northwestern school record in the pole vault with a 10-1 showing that bettered her previous mark of 9-7 set last week.
“I think we have some more room,” Groller said of Derr. “We have a longer pole for her that she’s going to use. I think when the weather gets warmer; we’re hoping to get to that 11-foot and keep working with her.”
Madeline Consuelos won two events (800, 1600) for the Tigers, who received individual firsts from 10 different girls.
DOUBLE WINNER ... For the Palmerton girls, Chloe Oldt captured two firsts. Oldt won the high jump and triple jump.
UP NEXT ... Northwestern faces Southern Lehigh Thursday, while the Bombers meet Notre Dame the same day.
