Palmerton UVO Memorial Day services planned

Published May 24. 2018 11:52AM

The Palmerton United Veterans Organization’s Memorial Day activities will begin with a parade at 10 a.m. at Second Street and Delaware Avenue.

The line of march will proceed down Delaware Avenue with stops along the route to place a wreath at the Veterans Memorial and then stopping again at the borough hall to place a wreath at that monument.

The parade will proceed to Fifth Street, to Franklin Avenue to Palmerton Borough Park, where services will be at 11 a.m.

All participants are asked to meet at Third and Delaware Avenue at 9:45 p.m.

Any veterans interested in participating are asked to report to the formation area to join the parade.

The growing and progressing Palmerton marching band will be featured in the parade, along with Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. Many emergency services groups will be marching in the parade and bringing their equipment, all to show respect for those who have served.

Featured speaker will be Sgt. Major of the Army Daniel Dailey, the Army’s highest-ranking enlisted soldier.

The flag was brought to the borough by Dailey. A Palmerton native, Dailey became the 15th sergeant major of the Army in January 2015. Dailey previously served as the command sergeant major for U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command, and is a combat veteran with four deployments to Operation Iraqi Freedom, and one in support of Operation Desert Storm.

Dailey donated the flag that graces the entrance to town from Route 248. The 20-by-38-foot American flag, brought home from Iraq by Dailey, was first raised up for Veterans Day at the entrance to Palmerton off Route 248 in 2016.

In case of bad weather the parade will be canceled and services will be held at the S.S. Palmer gym at 11 a.m. Doors to the school will be open at 10:30 a.m. A handicapped entrance is available between the church and school on Third Street.
