Panthers, Raiders get a pair of victories

Panther Valley and Tamaqua both picked up a pair of victories on Thursday.

The Panthers won in boys basketball and wrestling, while the Raiders won in wrestling and girls swimming.

Marian added a girls basketball victory.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Williams Vy.-Panther Vy.

Panther Valley rallied in the second half to defeat Williams Valley, 56-40 in Schuylkill League play.

Tristan Blasko maintained his steady scoring with a game-high 20 points for the Panthers, while Rene Figueroa added 11 and Allen Perez chipped in 10.

For the Vikings, Jake Wolfgang’s 14 and Colin Weist’s 13 led the way.

Williams Valley prevailed in the JV contest, 41-33.

Pottsville defeated Jim Thorpe, 53-30, in Schuylkill League action.

Sadie Comfort and Lexi Plachko had 14 points apiece to lead the Tide.

For the Olympians (5-9, 1-7), Payton Kovac led the way with 11 points.

Lehighton-Pine Grove

Pine Grove edged Lehighton in a Schuylkill League defensive battle, 26-23.

Skylynn Faust’s 16 points accounted for most of the offense for the Indians (11-3, 6-2).

Rachel Edge topped the Cardinals (9-5, 5-3) with 11.

Pine Grove also prevailed in the JV contest, 43-31.

Williams Valley-Marian

Marian turned up the defensive pressure in the second half to post a 47-40 Schuylkill League victory over Williams Valley.

Marian trailed at halftime but limited the Vikings to 15 points after intermission.

The Fillies ((11-2, 6-0) got 16 points from Emily Shaud and 10 from Isabella Schwabe.

For the Vikings, Mya Achenbach led all scorers with 17 points in the losing effort.

In the JV game, Marian needed overtime to defeat Williams Valley, 25-23.

Panther Vy.-Blue Mountain

Blue Mountain went to work in the second half to pull out a 48-32 Schuylkill League win over Panther Valley.

Emily Fasnacht poured in a game-high 18 points for Blue Mountain.

Erika Dubosky had 14 points for the Panthers (6-10, 1-8), who led 21-16 at the half.

North Schuylkill-Tamaqua

Averi Jordan scorched the nets for 27 points, leading North Schuylkill to an 81-47 Schuyklill League rout of Tamaqua.

Four other players scored in double digits for the Lady Spartans, who improved to 12-1 overall and 7-0 in league play.

For the Lady Raiders (9-6, 2-6), Kirstin Jones and Emma Kuczynski both scored 12 points. Emily Titus added 11.

North Schuylkill also won the JV contest, 45-32.

Tamaqua and Jim Thorpe battled in Schuylkill League action, with the Blue Raiders rolling to a 60-21 victory.

The Raiders got pins from Bronson Strouse (285), Aaron Coccio (120), Pierce Demetriades (126), Reese Szabo (145) and Brandon Mader (138).

For the Olympians, John Newhall (113), Ethan Mordaunt (195) and Austin Williams (182) all earned pins with teammate Will Schwartz taking a decision at 106.

The Raiders also nabbed five forfeits in the victory.

Tamaqua’s Bill Frederick and Tressa Barron both captured the one-meter diving events.

Madelyn Jones (200 free, 500 free) and Lexi Kerstetter (100 free, 100 back) were both double winners for the Tamaqua girls. Kayls Sherry (100 breast), Ashley Stanek (100 fly), and Sarah Maue (200 IM) also picked up victories.

Panther Vy.-Shenandoah

Matt Engler’s buzzer-beater gave Panther Valley a 37-35 victory over Shenandoah.

For the winners, Brad Hood scored seven points, while Engler and Ben Kindt both added six points apiece.
