Penn Forest Township awards bid to pave Weiler Road

Published July 03. 2018 11:02AM

The Penn Forest Township supervisors accepted a bid from Lehigh Asphalt Paving and Construction to repair and pave Weiler Road subject to review by township solicitor Thomas Nanovic.

Lehigh Asphalt underbid Shiffer Bituminous by nearly $5,000 and Papillon & Moyer by closer to $15,000 for the contract.

“That road wasn’t well built and the buses used that road hard last winter,” said Supervisors’ Chairman Warren Reiner. “It’s in really bad shape and needs to be repaired.”

The supervisors also agreed to have township engineering firm Barry Isett & Associates prepare a bid package to pave the parking lot at the Route 903 Recreation Park.

“We have received a lot of complaints about the amount of dust that comes off that lot,” Reiner said. “Tar and chip won’t work, we need to pave it to keep the dust down.”

Reiner said that the money for the paving would come from the park account.

The supervisors also approved the purchase of a 2015 gas powered golf cart with cargo box for $4,800 from Bear Creek Custom Carts. The golf cart will be for the use of the recreation committee at the park. The purchase includes a one-year warranty.

The township will set limits on the use of the cart once it receives input from its insurer.

The purchase of aluminum bleachers and shipping was approved in the amount of $5,578.

Reiner also made a motion to have the township construct a sand volleyball court. The court will be 30 by 50 feet and will use white beach sand. The motion was approved with a not-to-exceed cost of $5,000.

The township will also be applying for a grant to increase the playground at the park.
