Pleasant Valley routs PM West
POCONO SUMMIT – Pleasant Valley’s bats woke up Wednesday against Pocono Mountain West after the offense fell flat earlier this week.
“I didn’t have really anything good to say about the Pocono Mountain East game,” Bears’ coach Steve Caffrey said of the team’s 13-1 loss on Monday.
Pleasant Valley was ready to go against West, scoring 15 runs in the first two innings before pulling away for a 24-7 Eastern Pennsylvania Conference win.
“We came out swinging the bats today through the lineup, I thought,” Caffrey said. “Everybody was coming out with a little bit of confidence in their swing, and we were able to put the bat on the ball. As far as hitting wise today, we were fine with hitting.”
Lauren Steckel got the game going with a lead-off single, and then Cameron Caffrey lined an RBI triple to left field for the game’s first run, which then led the Bears to bat around in the first inning.
The rout continued when Pleasant Valley (7-10) put up a 10-spot in the second inning to go up 15-0 after an inning-and-a-half.
Meara Hanyon led the Bears with five hits, including three doubles. while Tyler Woltal added three more hits in PV’s outburst. The Hanyon-Woltal duo accounted for eight of the team’s 14 hits on the day.
Janelle Frable went the distance on the mound, limiting the Panthers to two runs in the early going.
Pocono Mountain West (1-15) got a five-run fourth off Bears’ pitcher Janelle Frable. In the second inning, Francesca DeLeo hit a left-field bomb to put PMW on the board.
Caffrey said the inconsistent spring weather has been much like Pleasant Valley’s recent play.
“Up-and-down like a roller-coaster,” Caffrey said about his team’s performances. “We had a nice game last week against Liberty, and we didn’t play too bad against Parkland.”
Wednesday’s game showed more of the high points for Caffrey’s squad, which still has East Stroudsburg South, East Stroudsburg North and Stroudsburg left to play in the regular season.
“We have a big game tomorrow against East Stroudsburg South,” Caffrey said. “We’ve got to come ready to play. They’re a decent team. If we don’t come ready to play, any team is going to beat us. We have to play a complete game.”
MAKING THE PLAYS… Caffrey said that the Bears sometimes struggle with fielding. “Sometimes, we don’t field. Today, we actually made the plays out in the field as well. We need to do that tomorrow as well. If not, we’re going to struggle.”
24 … Pleasant Valley put up a season-high 24 runs Wednesday. The Bears’ previous best was 17 against East Stroudsburg North on April 3.
