The man fatally shot by police near Lehighton in December was suspected to be a participant in a scam popularized by a group known as the “Felony Lane Gang.”

The death of Danny Washington, 27, was ruled to be an accidental shooting by Carbon County District Attorney Jean Engler on Tuesday.

Washington died of a single gunshot wound at the conclusion of a police pursuit which covered 17 miles and crossed through Jim Thorpe and Lehighton boroughs. Four other men in the van were arrested.

During the pursuit, the driver reached speeds over 90 mph and passed several cars by crossing into oncoming traffic.

Search warrant affidavits for the van and the men’s cellphones revealed some additional details in the case.

State police said in one document that they suspected Washington and the other men were part of the Felony Lane Gang.

The men were found with $10,517.29 in cash, and during the chase, numerous stolen bank checks were thrown from the vehicle.

“It is believed that the occupants of the fleeing vehicle may be involved in a nationwide theft ring known as Felony Lane Gang,” troopers wrote in a search warrant affidavit for the men’s phones.

Washington and three of the other four men arrested hailed from the Fort Lauderdale area. According to the FBI, that is where the Felony Lane Gang originated. The gang is believed to have stolen millions of dollars using stolen checks and identification.

The scam popularized by the gang has been seen in at least 34 states nationwide and follows a similar pattern.

According to state police, the scam consists of stealing purses and wallets from vehicles. The target is usually a woman, and scammers have been known to target cars which are kept running outside of day care centers.

Women who are in need of money are then recruited to cash the checks using stolen identification, with the recruit dressed to look similar to the victim.

They generally use the outside lane of a bank drive-thru in an effort to make their disguise more effective — hence the name Felony Lane Gang.

Engler said Tuesday the suspects from the chase have used these methods.

The other four men in the van are each facing 11 counts of receiving stolen property.

A local judge set bail at $100,000 for Cedric Cason, 39, of Lauderhill, Florida; $60,000 for 23-year-old Creshaun Demetrick Caldwell of Fort Lauderdale, Florida.; $50,000 for 19-year-old Tyrone Wesley Parker Jr., of Fort Lauderdale, Florida.

Bail was set at $1.1 million total for the man believed to be driving the vehicle, Mitchell Lawrence Knight, 27, of Sun City, Florida.

Police identified Knight as the driver of the vehicle based on surveillance footage from a KFC drive-thru the day of the pursuit. Police went to the KFC after finding a KFC receipt in the vehicle.

The men were traveling in a white 2018 Dodge Caravan with New Jersey plates rented from Enterprise Rent-a-car.

The checks were thrown from the vehicle along Route 93. Police searched the area and found checks which were reported stolen out of Mayfield, Lackawanna County, and other checks. The men were also in possession of a stolen identification card.

“The fact that stolen blank bank checks were recovered, the occupants possessed large amounts of cash and were in possession of another person’s identification card, and unknown females cashed several checks, it is believed that these individuals are possibly members of the Felony Lane Gang,” the report said.

In 2012, A federal judge in Pennsylvania convicted 10 believed members of the gang for a theft spree which took place in Pennsylvania between August and October 2012. During that time they broke into vehicles and/or stole identities belonging to 100 people. They targeted about 25 facilities like state parks and rec centers where victims left purses and wallets in their cars while using recreation facilities.

The man identified as the leader, Travis J. Russ of Fort Lauderdale, was sentenced to 188 months in federal prison.

They can blast these people in the media but won't release the name of the Franklin Township officer that killed their friend?
What would your comment be if they had hit a car head on in their 17 mile run and killed someone. Pieces of shit, only Reason I would like to know the cops hand is so I can shake his hand. I am not saying all these articles are pleasant, but you only seem to comment when its a person of some sort of color that was into some shit that could lead to it this sort of outcome is killed. He was a great person, they were only stealing from people and possibly affiliated with a gang driving erratically endangering many lives. Pieces of Shit.
My comment would be something along the lines of what are the police dept's policies on police chases? Most departments would rather call off the chase then endanger the lives of innocent people. My comments are geared toward the actions of law enforcement agencies, not just the stories about people of color. You seem to think it's okay that a man was shot and are willing to accept that what an army of officers and a local millionaire businessman say is the truth. What if it's not? Just because the man was a suspected criminal he never got his day in court that we are all entitled to. By not releasing the officer's name makes it look like something is being covered up. He took someone's life and even though charges are not being filed the public deserves to know who did it. The police put people's names in the media and on social media without them being charged with a crime so what makes the officer above us?
I don't need to know who did it. No one does. This officer has a Family, to release his name would be putting a target on his back. I'm sure you would love that judging by your psychotic rants.
finally...a comment from you that makes sense (make that 2 in a row, you praised the FD in that horse story).

And Im glad they deleted those psychotic rants from the other day where the name was given. At least now though we all know that this idiot method is trailer trash from lower nis

I wonder if he would have been shot and killed if they never got into criminal activities, stole bank checks, got into police chases and endangered the lives of others. Live this type of life and the risks of being arrested or shot are much greater, accidents happen, unfortunately someone lost their life in this process. Knowing the officers name after they declared it an accident is irrelevant. What would have been bad is if an innocent person got shot in the process, thank god it was only a scum bag.
If you could both take off the rose colored glasses for just a minute and put yourself in someone elses shoes. Imagine that was your family member. That wouldn't happen in your family? You would be surprised what your family gets into so don't give me that. And according to this rag they were simply pulled over for traffic violations and then fled. They knew nothing about the other activities until later. So this homicide is not justified in any way. Just because you and the other boot lickers think he was guilty now we will never know because he was murdered.
These idiots should've never fled in the first place if they were so innocent. The fact that they did goes to show that they were guilty of something. Not saying that he should've been killed, but it is far from murder as you're suggesting.
How do you know something like this hasnt happened to me. I am not saying people in my family are innocent. is it upsetting, yes, of course it is, but knowing what they did to get them selves into that position, even being a family member I feel less remorseful when I look at the the real picture. You constantly post absurd comments and really only post when you feel there is someone has some sort of injustice shit happening to them and 9/10 that person got arrested or shot for doing some shady ass shit.
