Police examining surveillance from Pocono Manor fire
The Pocono Township Police Department and the Pennsylvania State Police are still investigating the fire that broke out last Friday at Pocono Manor Resort & Spa.
The fire continued through the weekend, with several volunteer fire companies from Carbon County being called to assist.
Pocono Township Police issued a news release Wednesday saying that the State Police Fire Marshal Trooper Jeffrey Winters, believes the fire started in the dining room area known as the exchange room on the north end of the hotel.
The cause of the fire is listed as “undetermined,” but state police are examining the hard drives for video footage of the events leading up to the fire.
The digital voice recorders and the hard drives of the video surveillance system sustained heat and water damage, preventing investigators from viewing the data on scene.
Anyone with information is asked to call Pocono Township Police Detective Sergeant James Wagner at 570-629-7323, ext. 214.
The idea for Pocono Manor was born in December 1901, when a group of Quakers and their friends gathered at the 12th Street Meeting House in Philadelphia. They decided to purchase a tract of land where they could relax from the routine of city life.
Pocono Manor was opened on Aug. 15, 1902.
Listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, Pocono Manor boasts of an iconic golf course designed by legendary architect Donald Ross. The world class spa has a nurturing salt cave and has 3,000 acres of hiking and trap shooting.
Owners have vowed to rebuild the resort.
