More than 36,000 Carbon County residents are eligible to vote in the primary election on May 15.

Official voter registration totals released by the Carbon County Board of Elections show that includes 18,141 Democrats and 18,136 Republicans, those parties being the only ones certified to participate in the primary balloting.

The primary affords Democrats and Republicans the chance to vote within their party, as the two major organizations nominate people to run in the November general election. This year is a state and federal election year in which the voters will vote on the state governor and lieutenant governor’s position, as well as seats in the state Senate and House of Representatives.

On the federal level, at stake in 2018 is one of the two U.S. Senator seats, as well as positions in the U.S. House of Representatives.
