Remembering the 75th anniversary of D-Day

Published June 04. 2019 01:06PM

June 6 will mark the 75th anniversary of the WWII D-Day air and sea assault into Normandy, France, by Allied Forces. To commemorate this historic event that initiated the liberation of Western Europe from Nazi control, and to pay tribute to those hailed as our greatest generation, “Carbon Remembers D-Day, 6 June 1944, 75th Anniversary” will be held Thursday at Penn’s Peak beginning at 6 p.m.

Specific recognition to our quickly declining WWII generation veterans, and those who supported them on the home front, will serve as the focal point of this commemoration event, which was organized by Jim Thorpe native and retired U.S. Army Col. Chris Lukasevich.

Carbon Remembers D-Day begins with a performance by the SwingTime Dolls, an all-female vocal group famed for their repertoire of songs from the American Hit Parade of the 1940s and beyond. Following a brief intermission, at 7:15 p.m. posting of colors by the Pennsylvania National Guard will be ushered in by a formal welcome and singing of “God Bless America” by Emily McManaman, whose mother is another native of Jim Thorpe, the former Karen Kroculick.

The feature of the evening starts at 7:30 p.m. with the viewing of the epic WWII D-Day film “The Longest Day.”

Brave men fought and died on those beaches, but none of them were named Trump. Donald’s dad, much like son, didn’t serve. We need leaders who understand sacrifice, and what we have is a draft dodger.

Thank you WW2 vets. Let’s not forget what true leadership is.
