Road projects delaying travel in Schuylkill Co.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation announced that traffic patterns are about to change on a project to improve Route 309 in McAdoo borough and Kline Township, Schuylkill County.

Starting this week, Route 309 will be closed between Washington and Blaine streets for waterline relocation, roadway and drainage system reconstruction, Celebration Creek box culvert replacement, new sidewalks, curbing, and curb ramps.

Route 309 car and local truck delivery traffic will be detoured onto Kelayres Road/4th Street and Market Street/Blaine Street. Route 309 between Washington and Blaine Streets will remain open for pedestrian traffic, local car traffic and local truck deliveries.

Local deliveries wishing to access the borough to the north of Sherman Street are being advised to use Interstate 81 at Exit 138 to Route 424 to Route 309 south.

During this closure the existing traffic signal will be activated at the intersection of Route 309 and Blaine Street. This section of Route 309 is expected to remain closed until this November.

A separate truck detour remains in effect, with trucks being detoured to Interstate 81 at Exit 138 to Route 424 at Exit 141 to Route 309.

Most of the major work this year will be on Route 309 between Sherman and Blaine streets with new signal installations at the intersections of Kennedy Drive and Monroe, Blaine and Grant Streets. However, there may be other work occurring between Haddock Road and Washington Street, and between Grant Street and the Carbon County line. Motorists should remain alert for lane restrictions and changing traffic patterns in those areas.

The project entails full depth reconstruction of Route 309 between Haddock Street and the Carbon County line.

Additional work includes guide rail replacement, drainage improvements, traffic signal upgrades, and construction of Americans with Disabilities Act compliant facilities.

Lehigh Asphalt Paving & Construction Co. of Tamaqua is the general contractor on the $9.4 million project, which began in October 2018 and is expected to be complete in November 2021.

Work is also being conducted on a $3.2 million project to resurface Route 309 in Kline Township.

Work on this project includes milling, patching, paving, joint cleaning and sealing, concrete island replacement, pavement markings upgrade, and guide rail updates on Route 309 between Lofty and Haddock roads in Kline Township.

Intermittent weekday lane restrictions with flagging are in effect from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

H & K Group, Inc. of Skippack is the general contractor on the project, which is expected to be complete in October.
