Save Carbon County to host rally Sunday

Published October 26. 2019 11:04PM

Members of Save Carbon County, a concerned citizens’ group opposed to the PennEast/UGI pipeline, will celebrate the organization’s fight to stop the PennEast Pipeline and recent positive developments for homeowners and environmentalists. The gathering will include great food (including vegan options), live music, and speeches to commemorate four long years of the fight against the pipeline.  Attending the gathering will be landowners and other citizens concerned about the impact of the proposed pipeline.  Speakers will include Eve Miari of the Clean Air Council and Margaret Shinsec, a long-time Towamensing resident whose farm is slated for a pipeline easement.

According to organization president, Linda Christman, “The pipeline is a minimum of three years behind schedule.  It was originally planned to be operational in 2017 and while PennEast is predicting that work will begin in 2020, the recent rejection of the pipeline application by New Jersey Dept. of Environmental Protection makes that doubtful.”  The pipeline was introduced to Carbon County in 2014 and Save Carbon County was quickly formed in response.

The group has organized landowners and environmentalists within Carbon County and cooperates with other concerned citizens groups along the pipeline route.  Some of its activities include testifying before decision-making bodies, informing the public about the pipeline, and organizing petition and letter-writing drives to the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission and the Delaware River Basin Commission.

Just curious--if the pipeline is stopped, wouldn't that mean the fuel would have to be shipped by trucks on roads or by trains on rails? Will the SCS group oppose these delivery methods as well? If their strategy is to stop gas distribution at all costs, will they then disconnect their ranges, hot-water heaters and boilers and take cold showers in unheated homes? What is their alternative fuel? They would probably also fight wind farms or nuclear plants. I am curious to know what they propose as a solution.
Just curious; what form of energy do these people support? They opposed a wind farm, in Beltsville, because it would ruin their view. I guess they heat their homes with unicorn farts?
