Lehighton graduate Cody Scherer had a big day for Kutztown University in the Golden Bears’ 55-5 victory over Shippensburg on Saturday.

The former Indian finished with a career-high 12 tackles to lead the team. Eight of his stops were solo tackles, while four were assisted. The sophomore safety also broke up a pass and was credited with a quarterback hurry.

Scherer saw extensive playing time in the game after the team’s starter (Shawn Turber-Ortiz) left the contest due to injury during the Red Raiders’ opening drive.

The 2017 Times News Football Player of the Year currently has 23 tackles this season, 17 of them solo.

Kutztown owns an 8-0 record and is ranked 17th in NCAA Division 2. The Golden Bears also lead the PSAC Eastern Division with a 5-0 mark.
