Schuylkill commissioners recognize National Clown Week
One of President Richard Nixon’s lesser-known accomplishments was the creation of National Clown Week in 1971.
In Schuylkill County, they continue to mark the event Nixon officially created, thanks to local clown “Splash,” aka John C. Sullivan of Pottsville.
On Wednesday, the Schuylkill County Commissioners welcomed Splash as they proclaimed National Clown Week in Schuylkill County. They recognized clowns for lifting people’s spirits with their antics.
Commissioner Gary Hess said that Splash has served the community faithfully through his work with the Jaycees.
“He has a heart of gold and definitely wants to share smiles, so thanks for that. Everyone needs a smile for sure,” Hess said.
Sullivan thanked the commissioners for recognizing his fellow comics. He said they will mark the week by appearing at nursing homes and events.
“I feel honored. I’ve been doing this 18 years now. It’s a great opportunity to share smiles with people of all ages,” Sullivan said.
