Schuylkill County corrections officer fired

Published January 30. 2019 02:39PM

A Schuylkill County Prison corrections officer with more than 20 years at his post was fired Tuesday.

The Schuylkill County Prison Board, chaired by President Judge William E. Baldwin, unanimously approved Keith Wittig’s termination during a special meeting. Board members first met in executive session for about 15 minutes before emerging to act on Wittig.

Baldwin said that Wittig will get a letter outlining the basic cause of his termination. Beyond that, board members did not comment on Wittig’s termination.

In other action, the board hired three part-time corrections officers. They are John Hoffman, Ringtown; Charles Griffin, Minersville; and Nicole Conway, Llewellan. Hoffman and Griffin are retired state corrections officers, and Conway worked at Northwestern Academy, Coal Township, a facility that has closed.

Prison Warden Eugene Berdanier said after the meeting that there are 15 part-time corrections officer positions at the county jail. After the three new hires, five openings remain. The county prison has 45 full-time officers.
