Schuylkill landmark fails to pay $6,900 hotel tax
A landmark Schuylkill County restaurant and motel is facing a lien for failing to pay $6,957 in hotel tax bills.
County commissioners on Wednesday approved the lien against Country Squire Restaurant and Motel Inc., on Route 61 in Schuylkill Haven.
The property is being listed for sale, according to county Treasurer Linda L. Marchalk, and has failed to submit monthly reports and the corresponding payments since February 2015.
The tax, which commissioners on April 26 increased from 3 percent to 5 percent, is levied on overnight accommodations.
The county since 2002 has imposed the tax, which county Finance Director Paul E. Buber has said generated $281,419 in 2016.
In other real estate matters, commissioners approved an assessment appeal settlement with the Diocese of Allentown for a property at 533 Sunbury St., Minersville.
A building on the parcel was demolished, so the assessment, $4,350, is now based on the land alone.
Also on Wednesday, commissioners awarded a contract to rehabilitate a bridge on Wild Turkey Lane over Little Schuylkill River, West Brunswick Township, to Kevin E. Raker Construction LLC, Sunbury, Northumberland County.
The company offered to do the job for $892,415, the lowest of eight bids.
Commissioners also approved an $85,000 agreement with Arro for engineering design for repairs to county bridge #103, on Old Mill Road over Catawissa Creek, East Union Township.
