Schuylkill League D-3 race tightens Marian cuts Panther Valley lead to one game; Panthers’ Blasko tops 1,000 career-point mark

A Marian victory and a Panther Valley loss Thursday helped tighten the Schuylkill League Division 3 boys basketball race.

The Panthers saw their division lead over Marian cut to one game. Both teams have two league games remaining, including a potential title deciding showdown Thursday at Panther Valley.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Panther Valley-Tri-Valley

Tri-Valley defeated Panther Valley 66-62, in Schuylkill League action.

The Panthers’ Tristan Blasko topped the 1,000-point mark for his career in the loss. Blasko, who needed 15 points entering the game to reach the milestone, surpassed the mark with :07 remaining in the game. He added another basket before the final buzzer to finish with 18 points. He becomes just the fourth boys basketball player in Panther Valley history — and the first since 1986 — to hit the 1,000-point mark.

Rene Figueroa led Panther Valley (12-7, 8-3) with 20 points. Trey Turner and Brandon Stilitino both added nine points.

For Tri-Valley (10-9, 5-6), Ashton Buchanan was the high scorer with 17 points.

Marian-Shenandoah

Marian fended off a furious fourth quarter Shenandoah Valley run to escape with a 53-50 Schuylkill League Division 3 victory.

Tyler Fritz continued his impressive scoring run of late, leading the Colts (10-8, 7-4), with a game-high 22 points. Jarred Maylath added 13 points, while Chris Ritsick chipped in with 12 points on four triples.

Evan Kosar led the Devils (0-20, 0-11) with 15 points.

Jim Thorpe-No. Schuylkill

Jim Thorpe made a big fourth quarter run, outscoring North Schuylkill by 10 points in the frame, but still came up short. Despite the JT run, the Spartans held on for a 45-44 Schuylkill League Division 1 victory.

Nathan Rosahac was big for the Olympians (11-9, 5-7), scoring a game-high 18 points.

For the Spartans (12-7, 6-6), Zach Stokes led the way with 14, while Doug Weist added 12.

Weatherly-Mahanoy Area

Weatherly (8-10) kept itself in the hunt for a district playoff berth with a 64-57 Schuylkill League Division 3 victory in overtime over Mahanoy Area.

Gabe Miller led the Wreckers with 16 points, while Julian Miller and Zach moon helped out with 12 points each. Steph Yurchak was also in double figures with 10.

For Mahanoy, Jordan McGee led the way with 16 points, including four triples.

SWIMMING

Tamaqua-No. Schuylkill

Tamaqua split in Schuylkill League action against North Schuylkill.

The Lady Raiders were able to pull out a 98-87 victory over the Spartans. Tamaqua took home first in both the 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay. Taking first on the night for the Lady Raiders was Lexi Kerstetter (100 backstroke), Tressa Barron (diving), and Kayla Sherry (100 freestyle).

On the boys side, North Schuylkill handled the Raiders for a 91.5-63.6 victory.

Tamaqua had just one winner in Bill Frederick, who earned a first-place finish from the diving board.

For the Spartans, Holden AndrewCavage, Reggie Crawford, and Joey Antolick each won two events.

Tamaqua rolled to a 31-11 victory over Nativity

McLaughlin led the Raiders with eight points.
