Schuylkill receives federal grants

Published March 20. 2019 12:50PM

Schuylkill County’s Drug and Alcohol Department has received two federal grants totaling $175,974, with the money earmarked for use in fighting the opioid problem.

County Director of Finance Paul Buber briefed the commissioners on the grant awards during a recent meeting. The grants are for $78,093 and $97,881.

In other action, the commissioners awarded Antz Energy Systems, Shenandoah, a $256,799 contract to install air conditioning for courtroom 1, the largest in the courthouse. Antz was the lowest of three bidders for the project.

Chairman George Halcovage said the work will be completed before the summer months.

The commissioners also received one bid for ADA renovations to the Tamaqua borough hall bathrooms, a Community Development Block Grant project. The lone bidder was Ondra-Huyett Associates, Allentown, at $35,565.

The county is also advertising for bids for a CDBG-funded ramp installation project on Pine Street, Port Carbon, with bids due by 4 p.m. April 1.

Six companies bid on a demolition project at 15 N. Main St., Shenandoah. The lowest bidder is AMC Enterprise, Ashland, at $24,848; the highest bid is Lycoming Supply, Williamsport at $84,213.

Comments
Ondra-Huyett Associates are reputable, but imagine a local tradesman working under the $25K Prevailing Wage level, could deliver much more tha OHA could, just because the local tradesman wouldn't be emboldened to paying his labor the over inflated wages demanded through Prevailing Wage Contracts.
And...
Demolition at $24,848 keeps the project below the $25,000 Prevailing Wage requirements.
A smart man would take that bid, because you are guaranteed to receive 30% more bang for the buck.
A smart citizen would push the PA General Assembly to raise the figure of $25K to $250K
Better yet... eliminate the prevailing wage act all together.
Come on PA Taxpayers... get involved. Get this state in order!
