Five graduating seniors were recently recognized and honored with scholarships to help them attend college. Members of the Pennsylvania State Education Association Eastern Region awarded $5,000 to students who exemplified the power of a great public education.

The event took place at the Bear Creek Mountain Resort.

PSEA spokeswoman Jessica Sabol said, “As the cost of higher education continues to rise, the members of PSEA wanted to do something extra to help our students continue in their education journey. Anything and everything that we can do to help our students, we do. It’s embedded into the culture of our organization.”

More than 90 students applied for the scholarship by submitting an essay about their experience through the public education system. One student was then selected per county to receive a $1,000 scholarship.

The winners of the scholarship included:

• Macy Moyer, Conrad Weiser Area School District, Berks County

• Avery Neipert, Palmerton Area School District, Carbon County

• Maxine Lapp, Allentown School District, Lehigh County

• Mason Hamilton, Nazareth Area School District, Northampton County

• Maxwell Babcock, Pottsville Area School District, Schuylkill County

In addition to the student scholarship awards, Eastern Region PSEA gave out two awards to its members. The Champion for Children Award was given to Audrey Mathison and the Eastern PSEA Presidential Legacy Award was given to Martin Herring.
