Shelter to reduce adoption rates for cats through August

Published August 03. 2019 05:52AM

Carbon County Friends of Animals will reduce adoption rates this month in an effort to relieve its inundated shelter in Jim Thorpe.

Kimmy Mulik, who serves on the organization’s board, said via email that fees will be reduced to $25 per cat or kitten through August. She added that some adopters might even be eligible for a free cat, as long as their per-adoption form is filled out and approved. The form takes one to two days to process.

Older cats looking for homes have already been neutered, microchipped and vaccinated, but those interested in young kittens might have to take on the responsibility of neutering after adoption, depending on the kitten’s age.

The shelter is located at 77 W. 13th St. in the borough. It is open seven days a week, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

For those not looking to add a feline to the family, Mulik said people can attend its fundraising events.

On Aug. 18, Radical Winery on Mahoning Drive in Lehighton will host an event on behalf of CCFOA. The winery will give $1 to the shelter for every glass of wine purchased between 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. Participants are also able to bring in donations — like laundry detergent, cleaning supplies, wet cat food and other essentials — for an entrance into a raffle.

There will also be music. Food will be available for purchase.
