SHINE students give to Toys for Tots
For the second year in a row, the Carbon County SHINE Career Academy students will be helping less fortunate children have a brighter Christmas.
Taryn Stewart, SHINE Career Academy coordinator, said that the students, who range from fifth through eighth grade in the five Carbon County school districts, are currently working on constructing Radio Flyer wagons and collecting new toys for Toys for Tots.
“The students have been working on the wagons since the beginning of October,” Stewart said, adding that in addition to the wagons, the students are designing and building a 4-by-8-foot wagon, which will hold all the donations.
The children are currently bringing in their donations to fill the wagon and will be presenting it to representatives of Toys for Tots the evening of Dec. 12 at the Carbon Career & Technical Institute in Jim Thorpe.
Last year, students donated four BMX bicycles and helmets that they assembled.
“We would like to make it an annual donation,” Stewart said.
