ShopRite donates Thanksgiving bags

Published December 21. 2019 06:34AM

ShopRite associates and customers helped get more than 10,000 holiday meal bags to people in need this year.

Village Super Market Inc., that owns 30 ShopRite supermarkets in New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York and Maryland, supplied more than 10,000 holiday meal bags to local food banks in the run-up to Thanksgiving. The Jimmy Sumas Holiday Meal Bag donation event is named after the longtime patriarch of Village Super Market Inc., who passed away in 2018. He spent more than 60 years in the family’s supermarket business and believed strongly in giving back to the communities where ShopRite stores operate.

The donated bags included holiday meal ingredients, such as yams, cranberry sauce, green beans, stuffing, gravy mix and more. Customers were able to purchase a bag at the register for $10 and store associates assembled the bags and made sure they were delivered to local food banks and hunger relief organizations in the community.

ShopRite Partners In Caring, ShopRite’s year-round hunger fighting initiative, also donates nearly 60 tons of turkeys each year to food banks in the states where ShopRite stores operate.
