Slatington awards bid for Shadow Oaks Lane project

A sorely needed infrastructure improvement project in Slatington is one step closer to fruition.

On a unanimous measure, borough council on Monday awarded a bid for the Shadow Oaks Lane grant project in the amount of $327,778 to Sikora Brothers Paving Incorporated.

Last year, the borough received a $250,000 grant that was approved by the Commonwealth Financing Authority under the Pennsylvania Small Water and Sewer Program.

The Pennsylvania Small Water and Sewer Program offers grants for small water and sewer infrastructure projects and can be used to assist with the construction, improvement, expansion or rehabilitation or repair of a water supply or sanitary sewer system.

As a result, the borough is only responsible for $77,778, which it will use from its water fund, according to council President Dan Stevens.

The project will replace 1,800 linear feet of deteriorating water main on Shadow Oaks Lane with 6-inch ductile iron pipe.

The existing water line is 60 years old, and the new water line will reduce or eliminate leaks, as well as prevent possible infiltration and contamination, all leading to improved drinking water.

The grant also funds 24 service lines and four fire hydrants to be installed along the new water main.
