Slatington shows support of crash task force
The Slatington Borough Council approved a Memorandum of Understanding with the Lehigh County Police Department and the Lehigh County Office of the District Attorney to show their support for the creation of the Lehigh County Crash Reconstruction Task Force.
Council President Daniel Stevens said, “It’s a joint effort and I think it’s a great idea that the Lehigh County Police Department have been able to pull together and mobilize their efforts in different areas.”
Stevens said smaller communities don’t have the resources or personnel dedicated to crash reconstruction, but it’s an asset they need.
Through the efforts of the Lehigh County Police Department, personnel from many small municipalities are pooled together to gain training in crash reconstruction and then they respond to crashes in each other’s locations.
“We’re trying to consolidate some things to make it more efficient,” said Slatington Borough Police Chief David Rachman.
“It’s an excellent idea,” Stevens said.
Electronics recycling
In other business, the council said the electronic recycling event held in April was very successful.
The borough collected a truck load and a half of electronics including 80 televisions and computer monitors. Residents were allowed to bring in one monitor or television for free and subsequent monitors and televisions were $35 each, Stevens said.
“That’s really a good thing for the community,” he said
Stevens said people don’t have many options for disposing of monitors, so electronic recycling events keep these items from being thrown away illegally as litter.
“It’s hard to find places to take them,” he said.
The borough is planning another electronics recycling event in November with the date to be set later. The company that hauls the items away is Responsible Recycling Services in Kutztown, Stevens said.
