Snowflake 5K to benefit Dylan and Gavin’s Rainbow Fund

The fourth annual Snowflake 5K and Remembrance Weekend to raise money for Dylan and Gavin’s Rainbow Fund will be held Saturday in Lehighton.

Start time is 9 a.m. for the run, which begins and ends at Zion Church, Second and Iron streets, in Lehighton. The event will also include a bake sale and huge basket raffle.

The Snowflake 5K was lovingly inspired by the remembrance of two brothers, Gavin and Dylan Krum, who lost their lives after fast and fierce battles with childhood cancer and its treatments.

In memory of their sons, Dave and Lora Krum created Dylan and Gavin’s Rainbow, which provides support to families with children suffering from chronic conditions.

Dylan and Gavin’s Rainbow is a nonprofit organization that reaches out to families who are experiencing a serious condition of a child, and also to families who have experienced child loss.

This is because during the very difficult days when the Krums’ boys were sick and hospitalized, they were overwhelmed with the generosity and love that surrounded them.

On Sunday, the Zion United Church of Christ will once again offer an annual candle lighting service to remember children who are gone too soon.

The event will be held at 6:30 p.m., as the second Sunday in December of each year is designated as “Worldwide Children’s Remembrance Day.”

It is a time to commemorate and honor the memory of children who have died at any age from any cause.

The program will include reading, music and candle lighting, along with the opportunity to recognize children’s, siblings’ and grandchildren’s names.

Participants are invited to create and bring an ornament that honors their child, which may be placed on the “Remembrance Tree,” to be displayed throughout the holiday season, and are encouraged to include a photo and/or the name(s) of the child (children) being remembered on the ornament.

Light refreshments and time for fellowship will follow the candle lighting service. Any donation of refreshments is welcomed, but not necessary.

Since 1997, a Worldwide Candle Lighting, believed to be the largest mass candle lighting on the globe, has created a 24-hour wave of light as it moves from time zone to time zone at 7 p.m. local time.

This observance was initiated by The Compassionate Friends, an international organization that provides support to families after a child dies, as a gift for families to remember the children who have died too soon, but will never be forgotten.
