STS acquires new property on Route 61 at Wade Road
On Feb. 18, the Schuylkill Transportation System took the final step necessary to become a new, state-of-the-art public transportation operations and maintenance facility to St. Clair by closing on a property on Route 61 at Wade Road.
The new facility, at the site of a blighted foundry, will provide indoor-covered storage, modern maintenance bays and equipment, more much-needed administration space and Compressed Natural Gas fueling for the STS system to replace their current outdated and undersized facility in the St. Clair Industrial Park.
STS is currently accepting bids from contractors for the demolition of the existing buildings as well as construction of the new 80,000-square-foot building. Schuylkill County will retain ownership of the current STS storage and maintenance facility located in Mill Creek and move additional county functions to the building. STS will continue to operate service out of Union Station in Pottsville.
The project is funded by the Federal Transit Administration and the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation with funds set aside for non-highway, public transportation projects. Schuylkill County is also providing funding.
The Schuylkill County Transportation Authority completes on average, 1,100 trips a day and employs over 70 employees with the Fixed Route, Shared Ride and ADA complimentary services.
This project is a long-term investment in Schuylkill County. SCTA’s objective is to enhance their ability to maintain a world-class transit system that would be able to service Schuylkill County with distinction.
This project will be crucial to sustain these services and ensure safe, dependable, cost effective transportation in Schuylkill County.
