Residents continue to question Tamaqua Council.

The floor was open at a prior Tamaqua Council Meeting and the committee was questioned about the consolidation of any of the four fire companies in Tamaqua.

On Tuesday, Kathy Kunkel, a concerned Tamaqua resident, asked about a possible consolidation; asking if there was any chance that the public safety committee would look into it.

“Yes, there is a chance,” said Tamaqua Council President David Mace. “I would not want to comment as to what percent probability at this point. It’s a complicated subject for sure. At this point, I would say that the individual members of the public safety committee are certainly aware of the discussions that have been had previously, but I’m not aware of any specific intent by them to engage the department regarding any discussion along those lines, nor is the reverse true either. … But the question is, is it possible? Sure.”

The East End, American Hose, Citizens and South Ward are the four companies in Tamaqua. Each company has a storied history and legacy.

Many local companies in the region have recently merged or have considered it. In fact, on Friday, Jim Thorpe announced a merger of two companies.

If any of the Tamaqua companies would ever decide to consolidate, the layout of the town itself presents a unique situation. Quick response time saves lives, and the busy railroad that divides the town could be an issue depending on a location of a hypothetical firehouse.

There is currently no proposal, plan or any official discussion of consolidation in Tamaqua.
